Debbie Smith Elected to NCSL Executive Committee

Lawmakers from around the country have elected Nevada Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Debbie Smith to serve on the 2011-2012 NCSL Executive Committee. Smith represents parts of Sparks and Reno in the Nevada Assembly. In addition to serving as speaker pro tem last session, the Northern Nevada legislator served as chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, and she currently chairs the Interim Finance Committee.

The National Conference of State Legislatures is the bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staff of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system. The NCSL Executive Committee is the governing body of the organization.

“We are pleased to have Speaker Pro Tem Debbie Smith’s expertise on NCSL’s Executive Committee,” said incoming NCSL President and Kansas state Senator Stephen Morris. “Her participation in NCSL over the years has been a key part of the organization’s success.”
Smith said she is honored to have been selected and looks forward to serving on the committee, working with other state legislative leaders.

“As our state continues to face so many challenges, it is important to recognize that other states are coping with many of the same problems, particularly during these tough economic times,” Smith said. “Working with legislative leaders in other states can be very valuable in developing innovative solutions and looking to our future.”
